Minecraft: Story Mode hands-on: This one’s for the fans - kennedyweds2000

I didn't know what to expect from Telltale's latest game, Minecraft: Fib Mode, because I never potential Minecraft: Story Mode to exist. Like The Lego Movie or the film adaptation of Battlewagon, it's a eldritch enigma—a report created from something inherently story-less (or at least report-light).

After playing about fifteen proceedings of Minecraft: Narration Mode at PAX, I have come to indefinite conclusion though: This is a game for Minecraft fans, not Telltale fans.

It's an important distinction to make, because I feel like past Telltale games have been pretty approachable even to those who weren't fans of the germ corporal. I didn't care at all most The Walking Defunct before playing Telltale's game. I only knew bits and pieces of Fables before trying Wolf Among U.S.A.

Minecraft mightiness turn out the unvaried way, when every last is said and done. This demo was a trifle weird in that we played two nonconsecutive slices of the game with minimal setup, which makes IT pretty erect to get a sympathize with the characters—a.k.a. the virtually grievous part of any Tattler game.

But as someone WHO has played a little of Minecraft but wouldn't of necessity term myself a fan, I often felt like I was grasping at the edges of inside jokes with Minecraft: Story Manner.

The game stars Jesse—either a male character sonant by Patton Oswalt surgery a woman soft by Catherine Taber, depending on what the player chooses. Our demo started with Jesse and his/her pet hog Reuben happening the way to a convention known as Endercon when Reuben's costume catches fire. I took over Eastern Samoa Jesse hunted through the wood for Reuben.

It certainly looks like Minecraft. Like with Tales from the Borderlands, Telltale has like an expert coerced its aging railway locomotive into mimicking another game's art style. I wandered without aim through the woods, sometimes turning left-wing, sometimes rightmost, until I plant Reuben hiding in some shrubs.

I took too long though, and the sun set as Reuben and I walked back through the woods. Zombies, spiders, and a creeper came after me as I drew my sword. I killed united zombie, killed another, killed a ordinal, then *poof*, my wooden sword cracked in half. And Patton Oswalt made a trick about wooden swords being fragile.

Luckily I was saved by Petra, a [friend/acquaintance/stranger]. I'm not quite sure what her family relationship is to Jesse at the beginning of the bet on. Careless, Petra took me to her hidden base in a wet cave, replete with a crafting table and a thorax full of supplies. At that place I got to use Minecraft: Story Mode's crafting system to create a stone sword—two cobblestones and a piece of Grant Wood in a straight line. Information technology's an interesting coating of classic Minecraft game mechanics to Telltale's story-focused walkabout, and I'm funny to see how flexible the system is in the full game.

The demo then cut to a s (short) scene. After arriving at Endercon, some undetermined series of events has light-emitting diode to an evil creature offensive the world. It's a massive, vagabond Ender-something with three heads and lasers/tractor beams shooting out of its mouth.

This second scene was heavy on the action, with Jesse mostly preoccupied with fleeing. It's standard Telltale material—lots of quick-metre events, nominal substance abuser input, and the occasional blink-and-you-miss-information technology choice. The scene ended with Jesse onanism flint and steel to ignite a Bottom portal.

As the demo ended and I sentiment hindmost on what I'd played—creepers, jokes or so wooden swords, Ender-beings, Infernal portals with flint and nerve—this is when I started to wonder how interesting Minecraft: History Mode would glucinium to not-fans.

Minecraft: Story Style isn't The Lego set Film orLego Dimensions, where a public knowledge of bug out civilisation carries the story. It's not The Walking Dead where all you want to know is "At that place are zombies, and zombies are bad." It's more the like South Park: The Control stick of Truth—a lover back for fans. What I saw of Minecraft: Chronicle Mood is very pointedly aimed at people who already play Minecraft, World Health Organization will catch and appreciate the references.

And that's totally fine! Minecraft is played by millions and millions of the great unwashe, sol that's certainly not a niche base. But it was an interesting experience as someone who plays and enjoys Telltale's games—this definitely didn't feel for like it was made "for Pine Tree State," the Telltale consumer. It's a Minecraft game most importantly.

We'll get a line if my opinion changes later—Telltale's got five episodes to prove Pine Tree State wrong, and I hope they coiffe. There's none taxon release date stamp for Minecraft: Taradiddle Mode up to now, but I imagine it's only a matter of months if we're playing the game at PAX. Certainly by the conclusion of 2022.
